It's finally here, Beta 5, a.k.a. the "everything actually sorta works" release of Pleco 2.0. Bugs notwithstanding this is very close to what the finished Pleco 2.0 will look like in terms of features and performance.

Download archive is available at: http://www.pleco.com/beta/pd2b5.zip

Audio files are at: http://www.pleco.com/beta/pd2b5audio.zip

Username and password for the beta directory are "plecobeta" and "beijingkaoya".

Note: this software is not finished, will crash on you frequently and may even damage your handheld, so use extreme caution when downloading/installing/using.

Rough installation instructions are included in the download - basic instructions for actually using the software should be posted here soon, and an automated installer on Pocket PC is also forthcoming before too long.

To obtain your Pleco 2.0 Beta keyfile, log on to the Beta My Orders page (use the above plecobeta username/password to access the page and your regular My Orders username/password to log in once the page is loaded) and activate your software. Choose Ordering from the Help menu in the 2.0 beta to get the required Machine ID code. To purchase new add-ons, activate your software on that Orders page and then click on the appropriate link for the add-on you'd like to purchase.

Users of some older Palm models may find that their Machine IDs have changed in this release, and we've also now enabled support for SD-card based unlocking/activation, so let us know if you need your ID changed in either case.

Make sure to delete ALL of your old Pleco 2.0 Beta data files before installing this; that INCLUDES your flashcards, as the database schema has changed since Beta 4 and the software will most likely crash if trying to load an older-version flashcard file. The flashcard schema is now pretty well finalized, so while there's still the possibility that your flashcard data could be lost to data corruption or some other serious bug, assuming everything goes smoothly you should be able to carry the data over to the finished version; we still recommend regular backups, though, and regular XML exports as well.

The audio files are still just the partial, 6000-or-so-entry set - we're waiting on releasing the full 30,000-recording set until we've finished registering it with the Copyright Office, since they're an unusually enticing theft target and we'd hate to walk into an electronics market in Beijing and find some third-rate electronic dictionary using our audio recordings.

For those of you who downloaded this before now, the missing files in the original download archive are available at:

http://www.pleco.com/beta/pd2b5missingfiles.zip

(pretty important as they're the actual application binaries)

The archive linked from the top post has been updated to include the missing files, so if you're downloading now you only need that.

If you install this on Pocket PC and can't see Chinese characters, rename the Chinese font file from ZYSongEbdt.ttf to just ZYSong.ttf, soft reset your Pocket PC and reopen Pleco and you should be all set.

The installation archive linked from the top post has been updated to include this change, so if you download that now you can ignore both this post and the one about missing files.
