Document Reader and PDFs

When using PDFs in the reader, some work some don’t.
I’m wondering why that is?
How can one tell when a PDF will work and when it won’t?
Is there anyway of combining the reader with OCR functionality?
Thanks

Hi 隸麗從容,

if you wish to open a PDF not with the regular Pleco PDF reader but treat it as an image for Pleco's OCR engine to interpret, you can select Still OCR in the main menu and then Image / PDF File. This allows you to look up any word it is able to recognize in the PDF.

To jump to any page number, you can tap-hold either of the arrow buttons at the top right for about half a second, then release the finger.

There's a test you can do on a desktop computer to see if a PDF is tappable: When you open the PDF and try to select some text with the mouse, if the text is selectable, Pleco's regular PDF reader will very likely be able to look up any word you're tapping on. If you cannot select the text in the PDF, then OCR is needed for at least that part of the PDF.

Hope this helps,

Shun

You're welcome. I think with tappable PDFs, there's an invisible layer of Unicode text overlaid on top of the PDF image, character by character. When you select text, the PDF reader / Pleco will access that text layer. See this article:

I have a Pixel7 Pro and and I use pdf files from Innovative Languages. This work great on the Pixel and Pleco picks up multi Chinese characters automatically to make English words. But when I use the Apple mini, some pdfs are not interpreted or it only reads a character at a time, whereas Pixel Reader will translate multi-character phrase.

Different PDF engines. If you email or DM me one of these files we can take a look and see if it's a problem we can work around (or file a bug report with Apple if not - they've generally been pretty good about those in the past).
