Instant lookup

Just like in Wenlin, is it possible to have instant lookup of any Chinese character which is clicked on in any definition in the O&E dictionary ?

Certainly, all you have to do is highlight the character and then click on the "Copy to Input Field" button to look it up in the current dictionary or the "Switch Languages" button to look it up in the opposite one. There's a breakdown of what all of the various toolbar buttons do in the instruction manual at http://www.pleco.com/manual.html#menus. If you want to go back to the entry you were previously looking at, you can select it from the "Recent Search List".

Thanks for explaining that - I should read the manual again!

However, is there a reason why a simple click on a Chinese character can't bring up the definition for that character (which is the behaviour in Wenlin) ?

There are a couple of reasons, actually. For one thing, we're already using tapping on characters to bring up zoomed-in versions of them (an important feature on low-resolution Palm displays). Of course it would be even better if you could bring up both a zoomed-in version of a word and its definition at the same time, and that's something we're looking into for the new version, but it'll take a fair amount of work to implement and so we're holding off on it until we're sure that's what we want to do.

Secondly, our font display system on OS5 devices doesn't register character taps properly; OS5 users are already sufficiently irked about the fact that they can't use the zoom feature on their devices that we don't want to add yet another thing they can't access. We'll definitely be fixing this in the new version, but again it's going to take a lot of work and hence we haven't had time to yet.

I'm not sure what yo mean when you say OS 5 users can't use the zoom feature. I am running OS 5 (Tungsten T3) and I can tap on a character and see the enlarged version.
Could you not make it an option: either a tap shows zoomed character, or it copies character to lookup field for instant lookup? That way, hi-res users can choose if they want the instant access while low res people may prefer the zoom.

As you mentioned in another topic, when I posted that earlier message character zoom didn't work for OS 5 users and we weren't expecting to have it working until the release of PlecoDict; getting it working in 2.1 was an unexpected bonus. You should get your wish soon, though; the current plan for PlecoDict is to allow users a range of choices of what to do when they tap on the character, including both magnification and Copy to Input Field, and actually we may even add a feature where you can tap on a highlighted sequence of characters (or optionally just highlight them without tapping at all) to look up the entire sequence.
