Missing flashcard “plus in box” indicator

Is there a magic setting that’s keeping certain flashcards from not showing the “plus in box” indicator when I view them on the character and word screens?

If I search for the character “予”, and then look at characters that contain this entry, Pleco shows many other characters that are in my flashcards.

However, “预” doesn’t have the “plus in box” symbol even though it’s on two flashcard lists. (See the orange writing on both pictures).

I restarted Pleco, but that didn’t fix the problem.

Any hints as to what might be going wrong?

Maybe the traditional character in your 预 card is missing or incorrect?

Hmmm….I imported the “2021 HSK“ lists that were posted on this forum last April. I didn’t do any modifications other than add some colored tags to them.

I do see that ”预” shows two traditional variants (see figure from original post), and when I touch-and-lookup the two different variants I get different dictionary entries, where one has a different 2021 HSK tag. (See two images below)

I have no clue how/what to do about that though, as this was just how Pleco processed them when importing originally…..of course, I’m sure there was possible operator error on my part! ;) I just let Pleco import the files with the default settings.

If you tap on the 预 entry in the results and then add the resulting item to flashcards (creating a duplicate, if needed), does that get the [+] to appear?

I created a duplicate card for 预, and even created a new category for it with a tag called Test A. But no [+] showed up, even though the tag did appear on the entry (first three pics).

I also found that the same problem is showing up with other words. For example “青” shows two containing-character Entries that don’t show the [+]. (See last three pics).

Sorry, figured it out now - I'd forgotten that that section wasn't actually supposed to have [+] icons at all. It draws from Unihan, which doesn't do SC/TC and only has a single character for each entry (and so would not merge with any flashcard that involved both simplified and traditional) - it's the same reason why we don't generally create flashcards from Unihan on import (and that it's set by default to be a 'fallback' dictionary).

So I'm not sure why those [+] are appearing, but the bug is that they *are* appearing, it's not intended that [+] would appear in that section at all - in fact, given the way that it's designed it would be difficult to even make them appear accurately.

Hmmm, understood. Are you saying it’s the [+] icon itself that is problematic? That icon doesn’t seem to do anything when one pushes on it, so it doesn’t appear to be operational as a button. Or are you saying it’s problematic to indicate whether a card is included in any flashcard set.

It is quite nice to be able to see what other items on the CHARS and WORDS screen are included in my flashcard set. It’s a cool usability perk. It’s not important to me which indicator icon is used. (If I had my way, it would show the flash card set tag names instead). My own studies only are with simplified characters, so I would be fine with just an indicator showing up limited to that set.

I’m guessing what you’re saying is also a suggestion that it’s completely removed in 4.0? :)

That - we don’t currently have a way to use separate logic for finding characters in flashcards in one specific place.

Yes, but you could probably get it back in Expert Mode if you felt like messing around with the relevant settings.
