Multiple characters in brackets

"甚" returns for me two dictionary entries (note that I default to Traditional):

甚〔什/-〕 , shén, meaningless bound form

and

甚〔-/什〕, shèn, adverb "very"

I understand that the brackets can hold (for me) either the simplified version or a variant. If 2 entries are returned, how do we know which type each is, and
how should I interpret the fact that 什 and "-" are swapped in order?

Thank you.

The brackets just show a simplified version, not a variant - if there's a variant that applies in both character sets then it should appear outside the brackets.

As far as the order being swapped, in theory the more common one should come first, but in practice individual dictionaries tend to vary enough in their interpretations of that that it's somewhat random :)
