Pinyin

I have created flashcards based upon my textbook vocabulary. In the definition section of the text file I have included sample sentences in simplified characters, pinyin, and english. I am using unicode fonts which correctly display the tone marks; however, when I import the .txt file the tone marks are converted to numbers (only in the definition, they are tone marks in the pinyin column). Is there a way to keep the tone marks rather than the tone numbers?

I'm afraid this isn't an option at present. But you could try this page: http://pinyin.info/unicode/marks3.html which has a free Unicode converter from Pinyin numbers to Pinyin tones. Going in the other direction is somewhat trickier, I don't know of any online tools that do that (our software does, but only because we're very careful with apostrophe placement in our Pinyin)

The thing I don't understand is why Plecodict converts the unicode pinyin to pinyin with numbers. It seemed like a designed feature. The algorithmn seems to be "all pinyin in the pinyin section will be in unicode pinyin, pinyin in the definition section will be converted to pinyin with numbers, even if they are written with unicode pinyin." Why not just let the pinyins in the definition stay as they originally written?

Because PlecoDict's text importer doesn't know how to handle tone marks. We want people to be able to easily reimport files they've exported, and that's currently not possible with tone-marked Pinyin.
