Pleco on your desktop... kind of (old Pocket PC plus Win PC)

I was just configuring a Pocket PC screen-shot app with a view to taking screen-shots and video of Pleco to show friends and colleagues when I was suddenly struck by the thought that I could use this little old screen-shot app, Dot Pocket (http://www.dotpocket.com), as a kind of basic Pleco Desktop solution! It displays a 480 x 640 window from my Dell Axim 50V (running WM2003) which I can get to fill up a big chunk of my monitor when set to low resolutions. I've taken a few screen-shots - go to http://sites.google.com/a/seeza.net/public/Home/images. If you can set your desktop resolution to 640 x 480, then it should look reasonable using a 240 x 320 Pocket PC too. You can even use the PC mouse to write characters and the character recognition was good enough to recognise some of my scrawls. I have no idea if Dot Pocket works on any Pocket PC OS beyond WM2003 as it's old software.

Still, now that I know this, I'll be using it to save my eyesight when I'm at the desk in future and it could be useful for anyone else using Windows and Pocket PCs - an interim solution until Pleco Desktop arrives perhaps.

(I've posted this in the 'Future Products' forum seeing as this is where most talk about a Pleco Desktop has been appearing.)

SOTI Pocket Controller Pro is a bit more expensive but looks like it will support all Pocket PCs and has more overall functionality. It also says it has zoom functionality - can you size up the window to any resolution, stisev? In which case, I might buy it too. On the whole, it looks like the better bet.

I've hooked up the PC speaker to mine and been running listening flashcard tests. Seriously, I think this probably meets most of my main requirements of a desktop Pleco and even better as it keeps the PDA as the base (rather than have say two sets of flashcards, stats and so on, or having to sync between the two). Speaking only for myself, I don't mind so much not being able to use it to access desktop apps and browser. For long study and reading sessions, this will be great.

Does anyone know if there is a "remote control" program for Palm or (for that matter), for the iPad?

Re: Pleco on your desktop... kind of (old Pocket PC plus Win

Not apps to control remote desktops, no. I meant something similar to what caesartg mentioned. Running the portable device FROM the desktop. I was wondering if anyone knew about something for Palm and/or for iPad. (Being too lazy to search for it!)

Emulator installation sounds good whilst awaiting Pleco Desktop.

Any pointers as to where to get a WM emulator?

Allowing Pleco to run on Device Emulator would be a pretty big copy-protection issue, since every copy of the emulator has the same hardware serial number; you wouldn't even need a crack to share Pleco that way, you'd just send around the keyfile and anyone else with the emulator could use it.

It also doesn't work very well, to be honest - the emulator's file system driver is extremely unstable, and we've generally found that if you exit and reopen Pleco on it more than once or twice on the emulator, database files start randomly disappearing / Chinese characters go away because it can't reopen its font file / etc.

I was trying to run it off my flash card to which Pleco is registered.

davidy - the Device Emulator doesn't seem to be able to read the serial numbers of SD cards inserted in a PC, unfortunately, though even if it did that still wouldn't help with the stability problems (though I guess as long as we put enough LOUD SCARY WARNINGS around it we could still offer it as an option for people who were willing to put up with the frequent crashes / error messages / etc).
