2.0.0 Bug Report Thread

The newest version of CC-EDICT for Pleco 2.0 causes some odd problems. First, the file can't be successfully downloaded to my PDA's MemoryStick using HotSync, the procedure instead generating each time a HotSync error message: "The connection between your handheld and computer and the desktop was lost. Some of your data was NOT backed up. Please check your setup and try again." The HotSync log has the following entry at the top: "Install To Card synchronization failed. Protocol Error: Unknown error. (4001)". Afterward, Pleco causes a fatal exception, requiring a soft reset, when the Home button is tapped. Deleting p2cedict.pdb file from the memory card solves this problem. Sadly, I overwrote the older dictionary file.

Hi!

I found some small annoying bug in the HWR ...

I am using fullscreen - so I just write in the entry field. When I start to write Pleco grays the entries after recognizing that I want to use HWR. But since 2.0 (still using 2.0.0) Pleco does not just gray out the text in the background but also sometimes the first couple of strokes are also grayed out ... So it feels like the first strokes where not perceived even though Pleco does take them in account ...

Can you reproduce that? At the moment I can't ... But when I was entering a set of vocabulary yesterday and today it was really annoying.

Daniel

Thank you Mike. I found out that I had to put the keyfile on my palm itself, not the SD card.
When I did this everything worked fine. I don't understand why.

When I installed pleco. via hot sink. when I tried to open up pleco It reset my Palm.
removed all pleco files and tried again. Same result. So for the second time removed all pleco files then downloaded the card files and transfered all the files to my SD card. When I started up pleco it told me I had to transfer a file to my internal memory I pressed OK. It did this for me automatically.

Then I followed instructions to download keyfile to card just like I did for the main program and it allowed me to use my previous purchased dictionaries minus the free ones I had ADSO these are now gone. But I could not use the newly purchased ones.

When I finally removed all key files from the card and hotsinked it to internal memory everything worked fine which is all I am concerned about.

Perhaps the instruct manual needs to be a little more detailed as to what to do.

I love the new program. And the new Chinese to Chinese and 21 century dictionary are great.

I even found the names of towns that I have previously lived in in the 21 Century Dictionary.

Thank you again

gaokang - not sure about that one; any chance the card could be running low on memory? Or perhaps there's just some issue with copying a file that large - could you try copying the file using MSMount instead?

daniu - that's happening because of a misguided attempt to fix the problem of handwriting recognition taking too long to get started by doing the processing on the fade in the background while you began drawing; since it didn't actually make fix that problem (due to some other UI thread synchronization issues) we're undoing that change in 2.0.1, so the problem should go away with that release.

jinji - that's strange, it actually should be able to read the keyfile from the card too. We'll have to do some testing on that - there's another issue with corrupted files on an SD card causing the software to fail to start up correctly, one which we've already got an experimental patch for (if anybody's having problems with the software refusing to start up at all with a "no font files" message, send me an e-mail and I'll send you the patch) so perhaps there's something wrong with the keyfiles that's triggering that issue. Anyway I'm glad to hear it's working correctly now.

Size wasn't the problem with CC-EDICT, as I deleted and reinstalled, using HotSync, one of the other similarly large dictionary files; nor was card space, as there's still almost 500MB left. Instead of MSMount, I used Sony's Data Export/Import programs to move the file to the card, which did the trick. Odd, but for some reason HotSync didn't like that file.

When I deleted a custom entry from my user dictionary, I had no idea that I was deleting the definition of a flashcard at the same time. Only some days later I found out that lots of flashcards could still be searched in the Manage Flashcards section, but no longer had a definition. This only became obvious by "Manage Flashcards - I(nformation) - Edit Card", when Pleco said "This entry seems to have been deleted from the dicionary". As I had "cleaned" my user dictionary from lots of duplicate entrys by "Modules - Delete Custom Entry" I had another problem: which flashcards were without definition? I exported the flashcards and imported the result in MS Access - there the missing definitions could easily be selected.

I suggest that Pleco gives a warning when a Custom Entry is deleted, if this Custom Entry is linked to a flashcard. It would be comfortable too if a search of missing definitions could be done in Pleco without Export / SQL.

"Fortunately" I still have lots of duplicate entrys in my user dictionary, because the job to delete the duplicates takes a lot of time one by one. To prevent deleting a flashcard-linked entry it would help, if in the "Add/Edit Custom Entry..." in the Modules Menu some information about the link to a flashcard could be seen (e.g. category,...).

If you go to the 'Advanced' search options screen, you'll be able to search for 'Incomplete' Flashcards, which may get you the ones you want. Alternatively, you can get a list of all the flashcards tied to your user dictionary by searching for 'Dictionary' -> 'User Dictionary', also in the advanced screen. I believe the definition will display as 'Invalid' or something like that, so you if you set it to show you the full card, it should, hopefully, display 'Invalid' for all the cards which no longer have a user dictionary entry associated with them. Not sure about that, but it's worth a shot :).

Thank you - searching with dictionary and then either NONE or USER helped to link all entrys to my USER dictionary :)

FYI...also had

"Flashcard Failure: Sorry, the flashcard session failed to initialize correctly--please exit Pleco, soft reset (reboot) your handheld and try again."

error after importing flashcard sets. I use WM 6.0 Palm device. I moved the "pleco flashcards" file to personal folders and flashcards opened. But all newly created flashcards gone. Seems like a bug?

I'm reading an (around 2MB non-unicode) text file with the reader but almost every time (while in the reader), if my PDA turns off (due to long time inactivity), the moment I turn it back on, it seems the reader is behaving very strangely. It becomes non-responsive in things concerning the dictionaries or the text(selecting words, switching dictionary, scrolling pages etc): For example if I press the right arrow of my device pad, it doesn't move to the next word, but it freezes, strangely enough when I turn off the device again and then on, the selection moves to the next word, but the problem is still there for the next action. Even if I exit pleco, this doesn't solve the problem. I just can reboot ...
Maybe it's too big a file for my pda's RAM?

PS. I also happened to notice that every time It leaves a huge 2,5MB temp file in my device's internal memory which I have to manually clean, could that be created inin the memory card instead(unless the user has locked the card)?

Just to let you know a similar thing happened again with losing the dictionaries (which i mentioned earlier in this thread). This time I switched on the ppc started Pleco and only had half a dictionary available (the user dictionary, which only had 2 entries and even these entries only had the pinyin and english text, the chinese text had gone missing). I also checked using explorer and all the dictionaries were there on the sd card under the Pleco directory. As before the sd card was available under other programmes, no problem. Like last time a soft reset brought them all back.

I'm beginning to wonder whether Pleco doesn't recognise the sd card when the programme is relaunched, if in the meantime the sd card was removed and replaced even though Pleco is not running when this happens. I'll try some more tests on it this evening and see if i can consistently reproduce it.

Cheers

royperrin - probably the flashcard file became inaccessible during / at the start of the import, actually; not sure why that is. Was that file located in the regular My Documents folder when this happened?

F_Kal - could be too big a document file (in general I'd recommend against doing much with GB/Big5 documents that big, in fact we seriously considered dropping support from them in the reader altogether at one point), or it could just be taking a few seconds to re-mount / re-access the SD card when the device turns back on - if you wait, say, 10 seconds after you turn the system back on, does the cursor then become responsive?

neilperks - are you sure Pleco was actually closed when you removed / reinserted the card? If it was still running in the background when you removed the card that could certainly cause problems, particularly on WM03.

The cursor stays irresponsive for indefinite time, and even reloading the file/exiting doesn't solve the problem. In general every thing becomes irresponsive in the reader, but if exiting the reader, the dictionary itself is working normally otherwise. Of course, when you get back in the reader, it's still irresponsive.
There are a couple more bugs I'd like to report:
When in the reader pressing the "percentage sign" (that pops up the jump to dialog) when closing the dialog, the button that let's you see the next definiton/pronounciation of a character dissappears!

Hmm... and where's the file located? Perhaps the reader's having problems accessing that. We'll take a look at the missing entry scroll buttons.

Again! Have WM 6.0 Palm750. Had "Flashcard Failure: Sorry, the flashcard session failed to initialize correctly--please exit Pleco, soft reset (reboot) your handheld and try again." after importing some flashcards. Imported successfully several times today, then this again. Rebooting doesn't work.

Pleco Flashcard file was in My Documents folder when I looked (there were two folders one newer and one older). I moved folders to Personal, and Flashcards opened, but all flashcards were gone again. What is going on and how can I avoid this. I can re-import flashcards, but manually added ones are gone. Thx

Actually...cards may still be there, but all in uncategorized category with many spaces. All category info not found.

F_Kal - that sounds OK, so I'm not really sure what else could be the issue here - maybe some other reports of this problem will come in soon and we'll be able to triangulate it a little better, but for right now I'd suggest that you convert as many text files as you can to UTF-8 (or store them in internal memory if you're using them regularly).

royperrin - this is beginning to sound like an issue with your Treo's filesystem / internal storage, actually; the flashcard file is getting corrupted somehow, and since all of the SQLite database code on WM comes from the SQLite project rather than us (making a serious bug extremely unlikely) the corruption is probably coming from something outside of Pleco.

How much free internal memory does your Treo have? I'd recommend clearing up at least 10 MB if it's below that now. Along with that, delete / rebuild your current flashcard file, and if you often sync your handheld with your computer, make sure to exit Pleco completely before you do that - it's possible ActiveSync could be screwing up the flashcard file somehow when it tries to back it up.

A few more crash reports: My wife and I are using Dell X50v Axims with Windows Mobile 6 Classic.

Axim #1:

Nov 16 flash card session, crashed after "reveal" button tapped
Nov 17 ditto
Nov 18 ditto
Nov 19 ditto
Nov 20 ditto

Axim #2

Nov 17 dictionary, using the small character lookup feature (bottom of screen). Wrote the
character in top half of screen, tapped "recognize" symbol, crashed
Nov 20 flash card session, crashed after "reveal" button tapped.

The greater number of crashes on the first machine probably reflects heavier use.

Number of cards selection missing from FLashcards

The manual at http://www.pleco.com/manual/flash.html#studying says that the first dropdown in the Open Flashcards/New Session screen is # of cards, but I don't see that on my WM5 screen - only Test type: and Show:. In fact I can't figure out how to limit the number of cards in the Flashcard session - is this a bug, or is there another way to limit the number of cards displayed in a session?
