We just released a new Android beta that - in addition to adding a revised 2026 HSK 3.0 list (also coming to iOS release version in a day or two) - greatly improves our “experimental” OCR algorithm. (Enable in Settings / OCR)

It’s a lot faster (in fact it’s now faster than the non-experimental one in a lot of places), it's more stable, and it also has better character positioning support, so we’ve added it to live OCR (it was previously only in still/screen) and added an option to bring back the green overlay style from the old old algorithm.

In total, this is more-or-less what we had been aiming to replace the original algorithm with last year (and pretty close to what we actually did replace it with on iOS 6 months later) - we regret having to drag everyone along with our interim solution in the meantime but unfortunately for licensing reasons we didn't have much choice in the matter. Once we establish it's working well for a good number of people it will probably become the default for new installs, though having learned our lesson from that previous transition we probably won't switch it on by default for anybody else.

We also fixed a few long-standing bugs, including an issue that made live OCR sometimes get stuck on the previous text after moving suddenly and a couple of stability issues with EPUBs.

Anyway you can sign up for beta updates at https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.pleco.chinesesystem to get it on your device.
