Does deploying on top of an abstraction layer make sense at all? E.g.

Not really - there's too much OS-specific customization required in our case, even with access to the full set of native APIs on Palm / WM / etc we've still had to design our own custom user interface controls to work around limitations in the manufacturer-supplied ones. Pleco may look like a relatively modest app interface-hacking-wise but under the surface it's anything but.
