I'd like to use the flashcards to learn to recognize flashcard words from their sound. When a new flashcard comes up, I'd like it to play audio automatically, or at least allow me to manually play the audio before I reveal the card. Currently, once I start a flashcard test, there is no way to play the audio until after you reveal the card. The play audio button in the upper righthand corner responds, but doesn't play audio unless the card has been revealed. Is there some workaround that will allow me to use the flashcard system as an audio-flashcard system?

Yes - choose a "Show" option that includes "Audio" on the main "Flashcard Testing" screen and then you'll be given audio before the card is revealed rather than after. (this was a deliberate design decision, but it's one of the more frequently confusing parts of the flashcard UI, unfortunately, so we may have to change it)
