Font issue with PPC version 1 upgrade

Very excited about Version 1, which I finally installed onto my HP IPaq this morning - and it seems the recurrent start-up bug I had suffered with betas has disappeared, which is wonderful. But now, my font is screwed up. I believe it was always SimSum - but while installing it, the process included a dialog box on my IPaq which led to automatic upgrade to SimSum font. Problem is, now my left margin word entries feature only partially-scripted characters. When selected, they appear fully in the definition window on left side of screen - but the characters in the scrolling list are missing certain strokes. What happened? Thanks, Mike. Kim.

Glad to hear that the startup problem is resolved. As for this font issue, that doesn't sound like SimSun, it sounds like the (less-than-entirely-perfect) demo font. Are you getting a warning message about the demo font when you start up PlecoDict? If not, what font is listed in the Characters panel in Preferences? Are there any other font options there you can try?

If you're already set to use SimSun, you could try tweaking the font sizes a bit - add an extra pixel or two to the size of the list font and see if that resolves this. Or check the box to enable ClearType (if it's not already checked).

If none of that helps, about the only other thing I can suggest is that you remove and reinstall the font file - make sure that you completely get rid of any copies of SimSun or PlecoDemo in \\Program Files\PlecoDict, \\Windows\Fonts, or on the storage card.

Thanks for such prompt feedback, Mike. The font selected was "NSimSun," and I changed it to the "SimSum" option. But it was still missing horizontal strokes in the right-margin listings. So I took your second suggestion and changed the font size through the Preferences option - took the listings down to 11, and that worked well. (So now how do I make the characters in the entry-line (horizontal, above the definition)larger? It doesn't seem to be responding to the "Definition," "Magnified," "List," or "(Pop-Up)" categories...) Thanks as always, Mike. Kim.

I'm afraid there's no way to change the size of the characters in the Input Field - they're constrained by the size of the toolbar. Though I suppose if we can't find another workaround for this problem we can look into adding an option to shrink them by a point or two in 1.0.1.

But this is still very puzzling, all Pocket PCs use pretty much the same system to render fonts and there isn't any reason why your particular model should be any different. Have you tried enabling/disabling ClearType? Are you running any other Chinese-related software on your Pocket PC? Or anything that manages or otherwise manipulates fonts? Also, it still might be worth trying to reinstall SimSun - soft reset your iPAQ, remove any copies of SimSun (using Remove Programs and File Explorer) and reinstall it with the PlecoDict 1.0 installer.
