fullscreen handwriting input

Hi I just bought plecodict and i love it. But a question. in the manual, on pg 34 it says:

"In this smaller version of the handwriting recognizer, the entire definition field becomes the drawing area. The "On"/"Off" button allows you to quickly enable or disable stroke capture; enabling the "Disable palette HWR after input" option in Preferences will automatically turn stroke capture off after you input a character. There’s normally no backspace button available in this mode, but you can add one through the Preferences screen."

How do you turn on the option of making the entire definition field becoming the drawing area? i haven't managed to figure it out...

THANKS!

You didn't say whether you're using a Palm or a PPC, but on my PPC, here's how I do it.

Tap-and-hold on the bi3 (handwriting recognition) icon in the toolbar. After a split second or two, A drop down menu will, uh, drop down. The bottom of the four choices is full. Tap on it. That should do it.

This works on both platforms, but you actually don't want to select "Fullscreen" but rather right/left/bottom depending on where you want the minimized handwriting palette to appear. If that doesn't enable this, tap on the arrow button in the handwriting palette and that should enable you to write anywhere in the definition field.

for some reason that doesn't work for me... it pulls up the separate screen for handwriting input. i'm on a palm.

Make sure you're choosing "Bottom" from that menu, not "Fullscreen" - fullscreen is supposed to give you the separate screen.

Thanks. And yes, I discovered it was in the abc DICTIONARY after I ASKED the question.

Thanks,

i meant writing on the screen overtop of the other stuff

Sorry I guess I wasn't clear. I didn't want the little window on the Bottom or Right or whatever of the screen to write in. I want to be able to write the character across the full screen like it shows in the manual. Meaning, you still see the definition and everything on the screen, but you can write the character anywhere on the Palm screen overtop of all that stuff, not in a dedicated little box. I still haven't figure out how to do that.

Aside from this, doing the handwriting input in the bottom / right / left box works sometimes, but sometimes the characters only get translating into some gibberish symbols. The separate full handwriting screen works dependably, though. Any advice?

Perhaps this is related to a more general problem on my Palm, which also happens outside of Pleco. Sometimes the Chinese character input (writing across the whole screen) works perfectly (and if I want to write English at the same time I just have to use the dedicated input section at the bottom of the screen). However, sometimes (and sometimes this changes very quickly - I don't touch any of the PenPower or CJKOS settings, so I'm not sure what exactly is going on) I can only write English on the whole screen (inside and outside Pleco), so the only way I can input Chinese characters is on the separate handwriting input screen in Pleco. what the heck is going on? i feel like i keeping flipping a hidden switch or something.

I'm on a HK-bought Tungsten E2, which came with CJKOS and PenPower etc.

Thank you!

a few more clues

oh yeah i forgot to mention. When I check off "Input Field Compatability Mode" then i can write characters and they show up in the input field, but the characters that appear alongside their definition are not the ones in the input field - they are totally different and random ones.

also when i do instant access from another program, the Chinese characters show up as gibberish, but the pinyin.

THANKS!!!!

On the handwriting input: yes, that's why I mentioned the little arrow button (actually arrow between two lines) in my earlier post - tap on that and that will collapse that handwriting palette to a little line at the bottom of the screen and let you write characters anywhere in the definition field.

Your other problems sound like they all relate to the text encoding settings on your Palm - go into the Characters preferences panel and set the "external text encoding" to Big5 and that should get instant access and the input field working correctly. The PenPower/CJKOS issues may be related - make sure CJKOS' Smart Detect Char Set feature is turned off.

still buggy

So... The situation has improved. I can now get that fullscreen handwriting thing. However, it is still buggy. For example, I wrote the first character and a list ofpossible choices showed up at the bottom, I chose one, and all was fine. I went to write the second character, and instead of giving me a list of choices, it recognized it immediately into the input field as gibberish. Since then when I use any (e.g. one of bottom/right/left/mini) handwriting input option, it also shows up as gibberish. probably when i come back later to use Pleco it will again work properly for a second and then stop. I am confused!

By the way, it turns out that my CJKOS was set to GB so I set Pleco's external text encoding to GB and that seem to solve the instant access problem.

Thanks!!

It sounds like PenPower is randomly enabling/disabling itself - when the characters are getting recognized immediately and turned into gibberish, that's because PenPower recognized them instead of PlecoDict. If you enable Input Field Compatibility mode, that should take care of the characters turning into gibberish, but there's not a whole lot we can do about the random switching between PenPower and our own recognizer, since PenPower doesn't provide an interface for other programs to enable/disable it.
