gboard handwriting input

Hey folks,
Anyone know how to make the handwriting input from google keyboard work in Pleco? i seems to recall using it at some point in the past but it doesn't work now. I can use the gboard pinyin either. doesn't matter which keyboard I choose it stays on the qwerty board.

New Gboard has an integrate chinese input (without the external pinyin input add-in).
We need to configurate the manual input, and press the spacebar for choosing this input feature.
For me all works well.

Doesn't work for me. The name on the spacebar changes from English to QWERTY and there are no Chinese characters just numbers. I'm using a Nexus 5.

yeah I've done that. It works fine everywhere else, just not in Pleco.

Mmmh... I'm using a Nexus 5X & Android 8.1...

Does it help if you play with the settings in Settings / Input Methods / Keyboard? Specifically, turning off Disable Suggestions might clear this up.
