New Logo

In honor of the 10th anniversary of our first product launch, we decided a few months ago to commission a new company logo; 3 months and 3 designers later, we finally have one we're happy with (designed by the brilliant and talented Gert van Duinen), and here it is.

This will be part of the new and similarly-refreshed website design that we'll (hopefully) be debuting soon.

When I saw the topic I immediately thought, "Don't you dare!"..... then I saw the new logo... wow, looks great! The older Pleco looks lifeless in comparison.

Big thumbs up!

looks great, are you planning on changing the app icon as well?

No, this wouldn't scale that well to that resolution and anyway the 魚 is the only thing telling you it's a Chinese dictionary :-)

haha, good :D thats a good logo, but i am too use to the iOS logo and having a chinese character is more appropriate

We're still debating how exactly to style the little guy on our website etc, so if anybody wants to see some possibilities there, Gert put up a neat page with some other concept stuff (new splash screen, e.g.) at:

http://cresk.nl/work/!/pleco-software

White-on-black, blue-on-white, blue-embossed-on-blue, etc...

I think the white fish/blue blackground looks really sharp. Seems to be in keeping with a fresh look, yet still true to the roots and has a nice 'pop' to it.

It looks good. Are you going to make a stencil version to for people to cut out and use to spray paint the logo/name near University language departments?

I'm a fan of Chinese brush painting, so I'd be tempted to go with something more along those lines; google images for "Chinese brush fish" for some nice examples.

Yeah, that's one of my favorites too - it's looking like white-on-black will probably be the winner for the website header, but white-on-blue is a good bet for the startup screen.

Heh, I was thinking more along the lines of T-shirts with witty quotes from 孔子 on the back, but who knows...

I'm a fan of it as well, but it presents two big problems for logo purposes: it doesn't scale down well to small resolutions (whereas this logo is legible at as little as 50 or 60 pixels high), and it can sometimes clash with other styles - we want this to be usable in a wide variety of places, our new website header e.g. is currently a pretty simple black gradient while our iOS startup screen is likely to be more textured and Retina-Display-ish, and a brush stroke pattern is much more likely to clash with those designs than something more minimalistic like this.
