Please advise on best way to dump cards to category.

The issue is this:

As I have started to study new vocabulary from various sources I've been trying to use the following steps:

  1. Import the document, open it in the reader.
  2. Book Icon -> Words tab -> Dump to Flashcards -> New category. This works, and all the vocab from the document gets dumped into the new category.
The issue: EVERY card gets added to the category, including cards that already exist in other categories. I'm unsure how to manage this other than going in removing all the super common words (ie. 的) from the new category every time. When I dump a new document to a new category, I really only want to add cards that don't exist anywhere else in any other category.

The end goal is something like this:
  1. Find new interesting reading material with unknown vocab.
  2. Dump all words that don't exist in other categories into a new category, specific to the document.
  3. Create a learning test including only the unique words in the document.
  4. Cram words.
  5. Profit.
This is essentially what I've been doing, but it takes to ages to populate the category with the words to study because of how manual the process is.

Am I going about this the wrong way? Please advise.

Why not just tap on the filter button at the bottom right corner of the words tab? You can filter your results to exclude cards in specific categories, or even exclude any word that already has a flashcard, and then only dump those.

That worked. Thanks.

Slightly harder one then: I really want the learning test to introduce cards in the same order that they appeared in the text from which the cards were created. Is this possible?

Yes, we haven't optimized it and it's a little slow but if you set the 'sort field' in filters to 'search text' / 'position in search' (which should actually be a standalone item and not a submenu), that will make the results show in the order they appear in the document, and if you dump that list to a category it should preserve that order.

After that, all you have to do is set your 'new card sort order' to 'flashcard categories' and select the category you dumped them to.
