PLECO Dict TREO 650 MEMORY Problem!

Using the Treo 650 and Pleco Dict newest version) causes MEMORY problems. The fonts of the Pleco Dict or Dict Databases seem to be read into the Treo 650's memory and stay there, resulting other applications to run out of memory and cause the Treo 650 to display OUT OF MEMORY errors!

Thank you for looking into this issue.

This is the first we've heard of this problem happening with the newest version... The only things PlecoDict leaves in your Treo's memory after it exits are the flashcard and user dictionary databases, so I'm not sure why you'd be getting these out of memory errors unless your Treo is extremely low on memory anyway. How much free storage space is there on your Treo? What other applications are you using? Are all of PlecoDict's data files (other than the handwriting recognizer) installed to an expansion card?

Hi Mike,

I now have 9.63M free internal RAM. I am running a Treo 650 (non SIM-locked), purchased in China. SO it came with the Chinese system... CJK OS V 4.63 and PenPower V. 2.0L3 installed on the ROM of the Treo 650.

And the following apps are installed on my Treo 650:

- Acid Pro Image (http://www.acid-image.com)
- Mega Clock (http://www.megasoft2000.com)
- PlecoDict (all possible Data on SD-Card - Automatic Installer)
- SplashID (http://www.splashdata.com)
- SnapperMail (http://www.snappermail.com)
- pTunes (http://www.pocket-tunes.com)
- TAKEphONE 6.50 (http://www.shsh.com)

on SD-Card:
- HandZipper (http://www.handwatch.com)
- Metronome (V. 1.3)
- Violin Tuner (V 1.1.1)
- Atum (http://www.gameskitchen.com/atum)
- Solitaire (v.3.1p)
- Xiang (Chinese Chess http://palm.pair.com/)
- Zap!2016 (http://www.astraware.com)

Nothing suspect in there... exactly which applications are displaying out of memory errors? Are you certain that these are PlecoDict-related? (i.e., they only happen right after you run PlecoDict?) Is your Treo running the latest ROM update?

I basically can get an out of memory error after virtually any app. But most liekly when runnig either Al Pro, Pleco Dict, SnapperMail, but even when running the SMS app, etc. I get crashes. I crashed on receiving an SMS to such an extent, that my SMS database was messed up already 3 times so that I had to delete all of it...

I had no chance to identify what app was the real reason. But w/o Pleco Dict, it is much much better!!!

We've had another customer report issues with the SMS app, actually, but we're having difficulty believing that the SMS database corruption could be caused by PlecoDict - unless there's something severely wrong with the design of the SMS program, the database should stay intact even if the software crashes.

So these out-of-memory messages happen within the other applications, correct? And they list those applications' names, not PlecoDict? Is pTunes playing in the background during any of this? Did these errors ever happen without PlecoDict installed? What about if you soft reset your Treo but didn't run PlecoDict right away, would you ever see an error before running PlecoDict?

pTunes and CJKOS can stay resident in memory even when they're not running (unlike PlecoDict, which only loads at all when you start it or bring up pop-up mode) so it's possible that there might be an issue with one of those. With CJKOS, if you're using it within PlecoDict (via Input Field Compatibility mode) it's possible that that might somehow destabilize CJKOS or cause its memory usage to increase. Have you noticed any bugs or crashes relating to either of those programs?

Also, is your Treo running the latest ROM version?
