Pleco for Mac Update?

RIP Apple announced iPhone duo

Pleco for Mac delayed another year to support the new form factor

I remember reading that a desktop app would be released in 2006, I've now lost all hope it'll ever get released

Nah, we've mostly been doing the stuff with layout margins and split-screen they wanted us to do for it already anyway, so while I'm sure there'll be a few bugs relating to asymmetrical screen insets or whatever, I don't anticipate it'll be a major headache like Liquid Glass has been.

Yeah, about that:

1) The '00s desktop app plan was predicated on the idea of Windows Mobile having a long-term future and us easily porting that version to desktop Windows; that idea went out the window on January 9th of 2007 with the launch of the iPhone (and rumors of it were influencing my thinking long before then, particularly as it became clear that Microsoft had no interest in actually making Windows Mobile, y'know, good).

2) The iPad launched on January 27th of 2010, at which point it was not at all clear that desktop computers would continue to be a separate category from mobile devices. This also came amidst a backdrop of my just having frantically ported my happy stable Palm and Windows Mobile app to iOS and then to Android and fighting my way to the top of both of those charts and really, really not wanting to go through that a third time for a platform with an uncertain future.

Indeed it's really only in the last couple of years - dating back probably to the arrival of the M-series Macs in 2020 - that it actually started to seem like desktop computing did have a long-term future and like that might not be too difficult to target with Pleco, and for most of that time I've been frantically trying to finish 4.0. "We'll do it soon after 4.0 is out" has been my desktop version estimate for many years now and that remains the current estimate, it's just a lot less specific than '2006.'
