Fresh from the (virtual) factory:

http://www.pleco.com/pd102a.zip

Just install this application file to your Palm to replace the version you're currently running.

Along with some bug fixes, this version contains the following changes:

Multi-dictionary English-to-Chinese search
Scrollbar in Edit Lists
Scrollbars in Edit Entry (plus the fields are all multi-line and can hold more characters)
Icons for the free dictionaries (ADSO et al)
Flashcard jumps back to session settings after review (as on Pocket PC)
Magnify selects the magnified character (making Copy to Input easier)
Copy to Input works on text that's already in the Input Field
Previous/Next hardware buttons in flashcards will also work to partially reveal entries
Handwriting recognizer button changes to match current character set (a cute little feature we added on a whim on Pocket PC)

This should be released officially next week, though we may combine the e-mail announcement with the one for Pocket PC Beta 2 (which won't be too much farther off, and of course will incorporate the 1.0.2 improvements like multi-dictionary E->C that aren't in Beta 1).

1. Do we delete the current PlecoDict.prc or simply overwrite it?
2. If we accidentally delete the current PlecoDict.prc, will we have to go through the registration process again?

Simply overwrite the existing with the new.

Yes. And if you happen to have imported the HSK and/or PRC flashcard lists, you will have to import them once again.

My biggest gripe is with how flashcards are presented in 'Self scored' testing. There should be an option to simply show and move on to the next character without having to tick 'right' or 'wrong'. Show and show again to move on. The advantage is that users who set a navigation button to show can simply depress a button twice to move forwards as opposed to having to depress another navigation button (set to 'right' or 'wrong'). I have medium-sized hands and find the navigation buttons cumbersome. I can imagine the trouble an individual with larger hands or someone who is disabled would have.

adamlau - Thanks for answering that.

And actually there was supposed to be a change in 1.0.2 to let the "Reveal" button also advance you to the next entry if pressed again - I'm not seeing it on my Palm now, must be a bug but it should be easy to fix for the "official" 1.0.2 update.

The Duelist - you're very welcome!

I don't seem to be able to get these features to work.
ie Copying a Magnified Character
or 'Duplicating' a Character already in the Input field.

So what happens when you tap on a character to magnify it? Is it highlighted afterwards (when you exit the magnified screen). And we've tested the Copy to Input change on quite a few systems... what type of handheld are you using? (sorry if I've forgotten) Are you using Input Field Compatibility, and if so, with what Chinese OS?

I am running on a PalmOne T5.
(not Running a Chinese OS)

Magnifying a Character Does Select it for 'Copy to Input Field'. (Works Fine:)

I am still Unclear about what is meant by 'Copy to Input' Text Already in the Input field.

Basically it means that if you select part of the text in there (say the second or third character) and hit Copy to Input Field, it'll delete the other text in hte Input Field and leave only the highlighted text. Useful for example if you want to look up one specific character in a Chengyu; you can already highlight and delete text with the eraser button to achieve a similar effect, but this saves you a little time if you're trying to get to one of the middle characters in a 3- or 4-character search term.

Now I Understand (Thanx)

 Just wondering if it would be possible to Default the
'Flashcards:New Session' Screen to the 'Start Session' Button
Instead of 'All'.
(This would save Accidentally Selecting 'All' Flashcard lists.)

TIA

BTW: The Ability to Assign 'Partial Reveal' to Hardware Buttons is a Gr8 Enhancement to the Flashcard User Interface. :D

Bug reports:
Flashcards "export to text" fails if directory does not exist. Default dir doesn't exist! Bogus error message.

Sometimes I can't access the USR dictionary. If I exit and come back in, no problem. I haven't been able to determine what conditions cause this.

Enhancement requests:

It sure would be handy to be able to edit/delete a flashcard from a session. I'd like to be able to copy from an existing card to the USR dictionary so I can create new cards, e.g. the examples in ABC.

It was once possible to copy & paste from the popup, but not any more. E. g. I'm in a memo, highlight pinyin, pop up PlecoDict to find the characters--want to copy those into the memo, can't.

The default directory doesn't exist? /Palm/Launcher? There should be a better error message, yes, but the /Palm/Launcher directory should be created whenever you insert a card into your Palm.

The user dictionary problem is a bit perplexing - have you added a lot of entries to it? How much free memory do you have?

Editing/deleting flashcards in a session would be nice, but it's very tricky to implement. We have come up with a solution, but it'll take a lot of work and there's no way we can do it before 1.1. (it's related to the system we're working on for syncing flashcards with a desktop program, though, so it should definitely make it in there eventually)

The Instant Access copy-and-paste problem is actually Palm's fault; for some strange reason they've disabled text selection in static text fields in newer versions of Palm OS, so there's no way you can select text to copy. And we can't replace their text fields with our own (as we do in the main program) because pop-up programs on Palm are limited to a very small amount of code (64K to be exact) and even the stripped-down set of features in our current Instant Access system just barely fit within that 64K. We could add a "copy all text" button, but that's a little worrisome copyright-wise, since we don't want to make it too too easy to copy large swaths of text out of the dictionary, and it wouldn't really be all that useful in the typical case where you just want to copy out a translated word or phrase.

Hi Mike

I am having Difficulty Expanding PDComplete102.zip (Official)
on a Mac Running OS10.3.9.

That's odd... the archive seems to work fine here. Perhaps we shouldn't have been so quick to abandon the .sit.bin versions... is there any way you can try downloading the file with a different browser? Or use a different utility to unzip it?

No, we're waiting on that until 1.0 is out on Pocket PC (since we're not planning to update them again at least until 1.1).

a few things

Hello, I'm enjoying the update quite a bit, esp the dictionary icons and the tone marks in USR dict. entries (I think that is new?)

Two small problems, I am not getting the icon for CEDICT (it is still a blue question mark)

While the magnified text->direct copy to input field is great, I'm missing the way pressing the copy icon with *nothing highlighted/magnified* would copy the headword of the current entry to the input field. Could this feature come back or this a bug on my machine?

Tungsten E with CJKOS.

One other thing, when I am running low on battery the T|E will stop reading from the SD card where I keep ADSO and CEDICT, it seems the first time this happens it catches Plecodict by surprise and forces me to reset (I cannot remember the text of the error message . . .missing entry, out of memory?)

Thanks a lot!

Henry
