Sentence flashcards can't be created (pleco anki integration)

I'd like to have cloze sentence cards, but no matter what I do it doesn't work.

It always forces me to make a phrase flashcard.

Did you turn on the "+ for each example" option in Settings / Definition Screen? The reader will just make cards based on the reader word, to make example sentence cards you need to add + buttons to sentences.
