upgrading questions?

Hello Folks,

First, congratulations to Mike for such a significant upgrade and all the hard work.

Second, I currently use PLECO 1.03 and wish to switch over to PLECO 2.0 (Professional Bundle)

According to my orders page, my purchased components include:

* Oxford Concise English & Chinese Dictionary
* PlecoDict Engine
* Hanwang Handwriting Recognizer for PlecoDict

I just want to double check, so accordingly, if I want to upgrade to PLECO 2.0 (Professional Bundle) I should purchase:

# ABC Chinese-English Comprehensive Dictionary + NWP English-Chinese Pinyin Dictionary bundle -- $79.95

Are there any other components that I'm missing that I would need to upgrade to 2.0?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Driftwork

PD2 Also Has Stroke Order & Audio Components.
Depending On When You 1st Purchased PlecoDict,
You May/May Not Have To Pay A Nominal Fee To Enable That Functionality.

Hope This Helps

Well, I went to the 'order page' and upgraded to 2.0.

The page then gave me a series of 'upgrades' that are available. In order to convert what I now have to PLECO 2.0 (professional bundle) I think all I have to do is now purchase the:

ABC + NWP Dictionaries + Audio + Stroke Order -- $79.95

Can anyone confirm this?

Are there any other dictionaries that I'm missing for a beginner to intermediate learner of Chinese?

Thanks in advance.

Tuttle is the other one you'll want to look at, mostly because it has a large number of examples. 21st Century/Guifan/Cheng & Tsui are nice to have, but not hugely useful unless you've already got quite a good grasp of Chinese, or (for the C&T dictionary) need those specialist terms.

It would be cool if someone could list all the necessary dictionaries for someone who is a beginner to intermediate Chinese learner.

Thanks in advance.

ABC's pretty much essential if you want to do any work with real-world Chinese language (newspapers, TV, conversations with native speakers, etc) - far more vocabulary than any other C-E title we currently offer. Aside from that, Tuttle's great if you want a lot of example sentences / explanations, and for English-to-Chinese the Oxford and NWP each have their advantages so it's tough to say one of them is unequivocally better for beginning / intermediate learners.

I am really not sure what path I have gone down relative to purchasing of dictionaries, etc. That is, in retrospect, I would have not gone with a starter configuration as I have found that I run into many things on the street in daily life that simply did not exist in my dictionary offerings until I upgraded to ABC.

However, 21st Century looks compelling and I would like to have it. The point was driven home today when I was sitting with my classmate who had access to the dictionary and I did not (my beta version apparently is out of gas). Is there any upgrade path that would allow me access to 21st that would be the most efficient cost effective path based on my current configuration? Or is it just to upgrade alone or in the bundle with Guifan...?

Also I saw another post highlighting that the upgrading of these dictionaries might cost once Pleco hits the iPhone, depending on what Apple allows ultimately in their store. If there is any update on this, and if it can be commented on at this time, please pass along.

At the moment, the only ways to get 21st Century as an add-on are by itself or with Guifan - we're trying to make some changes to the license for it that'll make it easier for us to sell more cheaply / bundled in a lower-level bundle, since sales for it are falling somewhat short of where we wanted them to be, but the results of that aren't likely to show up before summer at the earliest, and anyway it's unlikely the price would actually fall by very much.

I won't be able to say anything about iPhone switching costs until the iPhone version is actually approved and released - there's just now way to know how Apple will react to our distributing dictionaries outside of iTunes, they can be somewhat inconsistent about things like that. Though I just noticed a Korean dictionary in iTunes the other day that seemed to do almost exactly what we want it to do, so that's a good sign anyway.

Dear all,

If these questions have been already raised, please refer me to the relevant topic(s), if not, please give advice on the following:

1. If I downloaded pc201.exe from http://www.pleco.com/wmdownload.html on April 3, 2009, does it mean that I have the most updated version of Pleco now?

2. After downloading and unlocking new Pleco I still have old PlecoDict (I thought the new version were going to replace the old one automatically), do I need to remove old PlecoDict? I want to buy two additional dictionaries (ABC and NWP), wondering if having two Plecos on my device might create a problem in this case.

Thanks!

1. Yes, pc201.exe is the latest version unless you want to try beta-testing 2.0.2 (in which case see the Beta forum to download that).

2. It shouldn't create any problems to have both versions on your device at the same time (as long as they're not both actually running simultaneously), but on Windows Mobile at least there's not really much of a point (I'd say that 2.0 is almost unequivocally better than 1.0 on WM). The reason we don't uninstall 1.0 automatically is that you might want to have both around at least briefly for the sake of migrating over flashcards, settings, and such. You can uninstall 1.0 by going to Start / Settings / System / Remove Programs and uninstalling any item with "PlecoDict" (but not just "Pleco") in its name.

With the introduction of the ACE dictionary, is there a way I can upgrade from my professional bundle to all 8 dictionaries by paying another US$100. (Professional being US$100).

I love your product and support on it even after all these years. Its money well spent.

I'm a little unhappy with my Samsung Omnia since buying it primarily to run Pleco as its quite buggy. I presently use my Nokia for phone use and the omnia only for pleco.

I would also like to report that pleco runs on WM 6.5 (on omnia) seemingly without trouble so far.

We're doing all of those requests by e-mail, but send me a note about this and we can work it out that way. Glad to hear that Pleco is working correctly on the Omnia with 6.5 so far - Samsung seems pretty committed to that product line (just announced the Omnia 2 today) so hopefully they'll continue to make progress on fixing bugs.
