Which Classical Chinese dictionary should I buy?

scykei

Gu Hanyi Da Cidian or Hanyi Da Cidian? I've been studying a lot of Classical Chinese lately and a dictionary will be a great help. Is there any advantages of getting the former over the latter? Are there any more dictionaries of this sort in the works that I should hold out for?

Also, I can't figure out how to use Pleco with PDF files. Is it not yet implemented?

I have not done an analysis to any depth, but just comparing the various definitions for 焉, a functional word, it seems that 汉语大词典 is probably the best bet if you can only get one. It has more examples, and its definitions seem a bit easier to understand. 古汉语大词典's definitions are more succinct and technical.

Hmm. I wish there was an in-depth analysis. What about the normal, non-functional words? Are there any examples where the Guhanyu Da Cidian has better definitions than the Hanyu Da Cidian? For now, it looks like it would be worth forking out the extra money.

I don't have anything specific in mind. Maybe choose one common word, one obscure word and one proper noun to compare.

Okay then. Can you compare:

  3. 治 (word that used to have more than one reading)

Yeah. I guess it's a no brainer. I went ahead and bought it.

By the way, do you (or anyone else who sees this) have any recommendations for beginner text? Any books or texts that I should definitely go through if I'm serious about learning and hopefully mastering Classical Chinese?

How much of a beginner? What level are you at in modern Chinese? Are you in China so that it's easier for you to buy China-published books?

I'm a Chinese Malaysian but I've never been formally educated in a Chinese institution. I primarily used English at home though. But I taught myself to read a few years ago and I think I'm fairly OK with reading modern Chinese now. I've just taken interest in Classical Chinese a few months back and ever since then, it's been all I've been doing whenever I'm free. I'm currently about a quarter of the way through the book A New Practical Primer of Literary Chinese.

Oh wow. Thanks! I'll definitely check some of those out if I can.

What about books that are aimed for native Chinese people? I might sound crazy but I've been thinking of memorising stuff like 弟子規 or 三字經 or a few Tang Poems. The primary school students still do it here. Rote memorising might sound dumb to the West but the Chinese have been doing it for years so there must be something to it. Or maybe I should just try to find an annotated version of The Anelects or The Art of War or something. I dunno. What do you think?

This is a personal hobby. I don't know anyone around me who is even a little bit enthusiastic about Classical Chinese.

You're welcome! For attractive annotated texts, I think the last one from Beijing Language and Culture University Press "Introduction to Classical Chinese" may fit the bill. They have a selection of texts from the oldest to the most modern.

Would you like to be able to recite the texts once? And/or understand them deeply? I don't know of any introductions for native Chinese people.

Yeah. I think it would be nice if I could recite some of those texts from memory. But I also want to be able to understand and eventually write in Classical Chinese. Then maybe one day I will be able to contribute to the Classical Chinese Wikipedia. :p

Since you can read modern Chinese, I'd recommend that you try some introductory books written for native Chinese students.

I particularly like the series of fully-annotated texts done by 汪钰明. They are very useful for beginners.

The "古代汉语" series by 王力 is also very good. It was written for Chinese college students, so it might be more advanced than what you need right now.

As you get more serious about classical Chinese, you should also get a copy of 古文观止 (三民 edition). It's a fully annotated version of the reader of classical Chinese essays first published in the Qing dynasty. In addition to full translations and glossary, the 三民 edition also provides useful commentary and background information on each essay.
