2) By default the + button will create a card from the first entry listed; if you want to pick a different one, either tap-hold on that dictionary's abbreviation icon and pick the option to create a flashcard in the menu that pops up, or ...

When I tap-hold a dictionary abbreviation from within the definition screen I am not seeing an option to create a flashcard in the pop up menu. My options are Hide Examples, View in Browser, Copy to Clipboard, Manage Dictionaries, Send Feedback.

I think this one may have been discussed earlier, but can't find it in the thread at the moment...

When I am in the definition screen if I select an English word it gives me the option to create a flashcard even though I have E-C Flashcards disabled.
Photo Nov 14, 4 36 11 PM.png

When I go into Organize cards to see what card was added, it always adds ".45" from the 21c dictionary, regardless of what English word was selected.

Photo Nov 14, 4 40 41 PM.png

21c is not my primary English dictionary, but probably that word is overall the first card alphabetically out of all my E-C dictionaries. (As an aside, I cannot seem to search for .45 from the search screen.)

Hello Mike,

There seems to be some sort of problem with the Tuttle dictionary. Please, have a look at the attached images.

Hi,

Congratulations on the new release. I really appreciate the traditional Chinese-focused updates, including the "Show Zhuyin too" option, which is great because my Zhuyin gets rusty unless it's staring me right in the face. lol

The following was observed on an iPad 3, iOS 7:
  • Reader lag: it takes 5-6 seconds for the pop-up definition to appear after selecting a character. I know the iPad 3 is under powered (due to having to push all the pixels on the retina display), but this is quite a lag.
  • Reader/Flashcard lag: after opening Reader, I selected to Organize Flashcards. It took ~8 seconds for my flashcard list to appear. Again, I know it's an iPad 3, but still, that's a long delay.
  • Reader TTS: I selected to anchor the definition pop-up to the bottom of the screen, but the pop-up window isn't really "anchored" - it moves a bit across the bottom of the screen (landscape orientation) as the highlighted text is being read. I'd really prefer for it to stay put in one place. (That said, even when setting TTS to 50% speed, it's still way too fast for me to be able to read the definitions in the pop-up window anyway.)
  • Reader TTS: it would be nice to have the megaphone available as a top-level icon in the reader, i.e., be able to start TTS right away when opening the reader, without having to first select a character to gain access to the option.
  • Settings: will there ever by an option to sync or import/export settings across iDevices?
  • Flashcards "Edit card text": is there an option to call up the keyboard when editing a headword field? How can I make the handwriting input disappear after I'm finished editing?
  • Flashcards "Edit card text": select to edit a headword field so the handwriting recognizer will be displayed. Rotate the iPad between landscape and portrait orientations. The handwriting recognizer does not re-draw correctly on the screen when switching between the two orientations.
  • Flashcards "Edit card text": select to edit either the pinyin or definition fields. The keyboard completely covers the fields so that you can't see them while editing, and you are not able to scroll the fields up above the keyboard so that you can see them.
  • iOS 7/Flat Design: various dialogue windows have a "Done" button (well in iOS 7 it doesn't look like a button any more...), which I've pressed more than once accidentally, when what I really wanted to do was start a process, i.e. "Begin Test" (flashcards) or "Begin Import". Maybe this is just a result of the "flat" design world iOS 7 gives us, but it does lead to this subtle kind of error. But, maybe a more serious thought/request: why have a "Done" button at all? Take the App Store for example. When you are viewing the details of an app, a pop-up window is displayed, and Apple expects the user to tap anywhere outside the pop-up window to dismiss it. Should Pleco follow the same convention?
Again, this is a great update, thanks for all the hard work!

yuvalcho - 1) actually it's more prominent now; "undo" in the top bar above the drawing area.

oops, that's so embarrassing...i was so accustomed to the old buttons that even the really big "undo" button was invisible to me, i think more because it used to b the place for the old (unused by me) buttons, like radical or such.

i've got a question about flashcards...not sure if it's even a bug or how it was in the old version cause never tested it before...so, i'm testing my writing ability by choosing type test "fill in the blanks". now, normal words no problems, then moved to chengyus still no problem, but found out that some cards are missing, after a short investigation i got to the conclusion they were all ore than 4 words definitions. so is that on purpose? even a not so long like 一去不复返, which has 5 chars didnt appear...if it's on purpose i feel it could be nice to have.

Thaks again. great app. great work. waiting for the next versions.

bglasow - well that's odd, I'm not seeing it here either... tough to find a bug during the beta when nobody knows a feature is supposed to be there, I suppose :)

With the flashcard adding bug, what it's actually supposed to do in that case is bring up a screen allowing you to create a custom flashcard from that text, so I'm not sure why it isn't - should be easy to fix, anyway.

sobriaebritas - the problem there is actually that 牛奶 is listed as an "example" rather than a standalone entry; we're working on dealing with those cases more intelligently (PLC has quite a few entries in that category) but not quite there yet.

etm001 - those are definitely not typical lag times / not what we're seeing on our iPad 3 here. Does it help matters any if you reboot your iPad? (hold down power button / slide to power off / power back on / reopen Pleco)

Good point on the anchored reader bubble, I do think that having it narrower makes more sense than that useless full-screen-width version we had before but in this mode it probably ought to be centered rather than jumping around.

Megaphone icon at the top level is dicey because we've already got a lot of buttons there (too many on iPhone) - could consider it if we ever come up with a good solution for selectively showing / hiding toolbars though. (the usual e-reader gesture of simply tapping on the screen doesn't work because we're using that for something else...)

We're about halfway through a revamp of our settings system infrastructure, after which sync might be possible, but right now it would cause way too many problems.

Flashcard editing keyboard is a bug - we'd actually forgotten / didn't know that the keyboard was an option for that in the old app (didn't realize that that mode selector switch was still appearing - was supposed to only show up when editing a document in the reader) but now that we know it was / that people were using it we'll bring it back in 3.0.1. In the meantime we'd suggest copy-and-pasting from Pinyin, or if you really do a lot of flashcard editing, temporarily uninstall our handwriting add-on and revert to Apple's.

The other two issues are actually bugs we specifically though we'd fixed... there could be some sort of an awkward timing issue (events firing in an order they're not supposed to) related to all of that lag; do they get any better if you reboot your iPad?

Excellent point on the Done buttons, laziness on our part relating to the lack of that tap-outside option on an iPhone.

yuvalcho - fill-in-the-blanks has never supported more than 4 characters, it might in the future but it didn't support them in the old version either.

If you highlight text in a definition, then open the left-sliding menu and go to organize flashcards, the toolbar that appears when you highlight text remains on the screen and covers the "New Category" and "New Card" buttons.

C.f. extensive earlier discussion with Manou on that one - does the toolbar go away for you if you tap somewhere to dismiss the highlight?

If I tap in the definition/listing area the toolbar goes away in the search screen.
It won't go away if I tap in the flashcard screen unless I first press one of the arrow buttons on the toolbar.

Ah, glad to hear it - so hopefully only a few people experiencing the particularly stubborn version of it that Manou is.

I rebooted the iPad and responsiveness is back to normal <phew>. The remaining two flashcard editing issues still remain (handwriting recognizer not re-drawing correctly when switching between landscape/portrait; keyboard blocking text fields).

Thanks!

So when you tap-hold a dictionary abbreviation from within the definition screen you´re not supposed to see an option to create a flashcard in the pop up menu? Sorry, but I didn´t quite understand your answer to bglasow. I´m not quite sure, but I think that I did see that option yesterday; now I´m not seeing it any more.

No, it was bugged and we removed it before the finished release - it'll come back eventually but it's not in there at all right now.

This may be intentional, but when doing a tap-hold on the dictionary group icon from search screen, my entry list shows Full-text, Eng Dicts and Full-text, Chn Dicts twice (once under All Chinese Dicts and further down the lists again under All English dicts).

Also, that pop-up list seems to have some delineation with light horizontal lines separating every row and then every so often a darker horizontal line. I can't figure out if that darker line represents some type of group - it seems to break in random spots within my list. (like between DGNCYCD and GZHFYCD in the attached image)

Sorry. I'm new here. This thread is where I report bugs or errors right?

For HYDCD, when I search for
"膠", its own entry doesn't show up in the search result. Instead, you get the entry for "膠轕".

weingin - that's a funny one - do you remember which result you tapped on? And which dictionary it was from? Might relate to the user dictionary in some way.

Hi Mike,

I was able to reproduce the bug, but not regularly. I doubt that my Unger user dictionary is the problem, if any dictionary is to blame, I'd be looking at the CY. See for example:
2013-11-13 11.19.03.png
I didn't search for 主, obviously. Tapping on one of the results brought back this screen:
2013-11-13 11.18.49.png
But only once, going back to the various hits and tapping one (even the same one that lead to the blank screen - sorry, don't know which one) worked alright then and took me to the entry.

Now, I haven't gone through the new-dict-feedback-thread, so maybe this was already reported, but getting weird CY entries, that don't match at all the thing I was searching for, is sort of regular for me. Going to investigate further. Redownload the dictionary etc...

One different, clearly identifiable bug:
2013-11-14 13.08.58.png
Go to the search screen in portrait mode, select handwriting option, go to the menu and select live video. Then turn the ocr mode to landscape. Now long-press the menu button to get back to the search screen and voila, you should get something similar to the screenshot above. Occured on and iPhone 5 and 5s.

Hi Mike, after getting the 7.0.4 iOS update for my iPad I thought I'd have another quick play with getting my search history to sync using iCloud. Still no go. However, where do you (or Apple) store the history for it to get synchronised? My iPad is on stock iOS7 but my iPhone allows me more access as it's a jailbroken iOS6 device.

In /var/mobile/Library/Mobile Documents I can see a directory for Pleco. There are two sub-directories: Databases (which contains the flashcards - that sync perfectly) and Documents (which is empty). Any help to you? As no-one else has chimed in to say they have the same problem, it seems to be just me! Oh well. At some point in the near future my 3GS will hit the bin as the screen is dying, and I'll be on iOS7 on a new mobile device too. That may well solve the issue.

Hi Mike,

I am running a 3GS with 6.1.3 and a tethered jailbreak. After rebooting my phone, I am unable to use my flashcards and am unsure how to solve the problem. I'm not sure if this is something that has to be fixed in a future release or if there is a current work around.

Thanks!
