Yes I was looking at the iPhone, but the iPad works the same way if you switch off "embed definition" in Settings->Search Screen. The up/down buttons are then quite handy, and the 'back' button (labelled '<') takes you back from an entry to the results list.
Even with 'embed definition' on, you can navigate to other definitions by selecting them, clicking on them in chars/words, etc. when you do that, you have back/forward buttons that are extremely useful appear on the too right of the iPad screen. Having these buttons take you to the result of a previous search, perhaps that you made days or weeks ago, seems confusing to me.
